PETITION GAINS MOMENTUM CALLING ON PRESIDENT OBAMA TO STOP THE FDA FROM LIMITING ADULT STEM CELL TREATMENT
Release date: 2/12/2014
The petition asserts that “FDA control of a person’s own stem cells stifles medical progress and threatens the lives of those dying from incurable illnesses.”
Dallas, Texas, U.S. – [February 12, 2014] – A petition begun by Claire Hooper, a member of Patients For Stem Cells (www.patientsforstemcells.org), is currently being circulated calling for President Obama to “please stop the FDA’s [Food and Drug Administration] assertion that the use of our body’s own stem cells (AASC) is a ‘biological drug’ and thereby subject to FDA regulation.” AASC stands for Autologous Adult Stem Cells, or stem cells derived from a person’s own tissue.
The petition, which is rapidly gaining momentum, is being circulated via Move On (www.moveon.org), which describes itself as an “organization which focuses primarily on nonpartisan education and advocacy on important national issues.”
Currently, adult stem cell treatment is being used to help patients recover from over 150 debilitating chronic conditions previously thought to be untreatable, including the “Big Three” – Heart Disease, Diabetes, and Lung Diseases. To date, commercial stem cell treatments have been used by over 30,000 patients with a more than 65% success rate. Because the use of autologous adult stem cells means that the donor and recipient is the same person, risk of rejection or adverse reactions is all but eliminated.
Patients For Stem Cells is concerned that a recent FDA decision to classify autologous adult stem cells as drugs precludes general access “to this life saving therapy in the U.S.” The petition notes that “AASC therapies offer a less expensive, comparatively safe, and more effective outcome for many diseases than do conventional medical treatments.”
